Limited time events have always been a special part of the Magic Kingdom. Since the 1950's, countless organizations, civic clubs and historical societies have been welcome participants in these events. The Disneyland entertainment division has also produced countless promotional park overlays to attract both local visitors and return guests.

Disneyland's very first special park event was it's own grand opening, which was also a live television event. These opening day festivities included dedication ceremonies for each themed land and dozens of new attractions, live musical performers, an elaborate parade, choreographed production numbers, and an array of special guest stars.

The Disneyland opening day lineup included the very best in Disney entertainment circa 1955, including the all-new Disneyland Band, Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen from the Davy Crockett TV serial, the Firehouse 5 Plus 2 comprised of Walt Disney's studio staff, and the young stars of the Mickey Mouse Club, premiering the following October.

- Mickey Mouse Club Circus -
Walt Disney loved the circus as a boy, and one of Disneyland's earliest limited time events was in fact a full-scale circus presented on the outskirts of Fantasyland. Also in 1955, a recurring "Circus Day" segment was being featured every week on the Mickey Mouse Club. This evolved into the Mickey Mouse Club Circus in Disneyland, a big top extravaganza featuring traditional circus acts, animals, clowns and the Mouseketeers.

Throughout the 1950's, Walt Disney invited local antique automobile restoration club members to Disneyland to participate in processions down Main Street, sporting their vintage cars while dressed in period appropriate costumes. Due to their popularity, these horseless carriage events also became part of the annual Easter Parade tradition.

9 - Holidayland 02:26
Holidayland is often referred to as the "lost" land of Disneyland. This 9-acre picnic and recreational facility for special events held by civic groups and other organizations was open from 1957-1961, and was located just to the west of the main gate. It also included a playground, baseball field and a large circus tent for live shows and entertainment.

10 - Aunt Jemima Pancake Races 02:19
Disneyland once held an annual event sponsored by Quaker Oats, the makers of Aunt Jemima Pancakes. Dozens of women were invited to race down Main Street USA dressed in their typical 1950's housewife attire, including aprons and heels, while continually flipping pancakes on a cast iron griddles. The races were held from 1957 through 1964.

Zorro was a highly rated TV program produced by the Disney Studio in the 1950's. During the run of this popular series, actual stars from the show made frequent guest appearances in Disneyland, including the masked avenger portrayed by Guy Williams. These events always included dramatic sword fights staged throughout Frontierland.

Date Nite in Disneyland was an ongoing promotional event which first began in 1957, and remained a staple of the park's nighttime entertainment throughout the 1960's. For a special after hours admission, teens and young adults were invited to dance the night away to live bands, while enjoying Disneyland's attractions under the stars.

Date Nite in Disneyland events became an immediate hit with Southern California teens and young adults. This quickly led to mid-afternoon, "Soda Time," dances also held at Plaza Gardens. This iteration included the same level of top tier Big Band entertainment as did the popular night time events, but was open to daytime guests of all ages.

In the Summer of 1959, Walt Disney unveiled three new 'E' ticket Disneyland additions, the Submarine Voyage Through Liquid Space, the Disneyland Alweg Monorail System and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. A special holiday was proclaimed, hailed as "The Second Opening of Disneyland," The festivities were broadcast on live TV, and included a special parade, dedication ceremonies, celebrity guests, and live entertainment..

A decades long tradition began the night of June 15th 1961, when Disneyland hosted its first annual Grad Nite. The inguinal affair was attended by over 8,500 local high school students, and over the decades, over five million graduates have attended these events. The 1961 guest star line-up included in-park regulars and the Firehouse-Five plus Two.

Many legendary Big Bands from the golden age of swing music made frequent guest appearances in Disneyland After Dark throughout the 1960's. The annual Cavalcade of Big Bands welcomed the orchestras of such greats as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Les Brown, Lionel Hampton, Harry James, Woody Herman and Duke Ellington.

At the Disneyland Art Festival, held on the sidewalks of East Center Street in the early '60's, guests could browse through aisles of colorful art, including original watercolor and oil paintings available for purchase. For an even more one-of-a-kind souvenir, guests could also sit for an on the spot charcoal portrait by a visiting artist.

A special ticketed promotion, that became a very popular annual event, was the "Spring Fling," held during spring break from 1962 through the mid 70's. There was unlimited use of all attractions as guests danced to popular bands throughout the park. A special drawing was also held, and one lucky guest would drive away in a brand new car.

In 1969 a special event was held to promote the hit new Disney comedy "The Love Bug." Anyone who wanted to participate in the Love Bug parade was invited to decorate their own Volkswagen Beetle for entry in a contest for most original design. The promotion proved so popular that it returned in 1974 for the film's sequel... Herbie Rides Again.

- Disney Days -
In 1972 Disneyland began hosting events themed around popular Disney characters. The first of these was the Cinderella Festival, a day "just for the ladies," with a beauty pageant, cooking demonstrations and garden tours. Winnie the Pooh campaigned for president during the '72 and '76 presidential elections. Alice also had several Disney days. as did the original Mouseketeers who made multiple guest star appearances.

Disneyland is known for celebrating popular American music. In 1972 Disneyland hosted a concert series at the Tomorrowland Stage in honor of the golden age of Rock and Roll. Every performance was opened by oldies cover band Sha-Na-Na, and featured such legendary performers as Chuck Berry, Frankie Avalon, The Drifters and The Platters.

Night of Joy was an annual music festival, first presented in 1976. During these special after hours events, Christian spiritual music was performed at various venues throughout the park. - Circus Fantasy -
From 1986 through 1988, Disneyland held its annual Circus Fantasy event, bringing the big top back to the Magic Kingdom on a grand scale. Park-wide, guests would find live acrobatic acts, a human cannonball, clowns aplenty and animal stunt shows. There was also a daily procession down Main Street USA, in the grand tradition of an old fashioned circus parade and Videopolis hosted a special Circus Fantasy stage show.

- The Disneyland State Fair -
Another seasonal event that ran from 1987-1988 was the Disneyland State Fair. To turn the park into an old-fashioned fairground, at the front of the Main Street train station a large Ferris Wheel was erected, and carnival games and blue ribbon exhibits could be found throughout the park. At Big Thunder Ranch there was a special pig racing event called Pig Mania, and every afternoon guests could enjoy the Come to the Fair Parade.

The Motor Boat Cruise and Fantasyland Autopia were re-themed for the event, several meet and greet photo locations modeled after the fictional town of Duckburg USA could be found here, and a special stage show was presented at Videopolis.

Running from October 2007 through December 2008, Disneyland celebrated what was called "A Year of a Million Dreams," a promotional campaign granting park guests an array of prizes, from free vacations to overnight stays inside the park. - RunDisney -
The Walt Disney World Resort had long been hosting marathon races , when in .2014, under the partnership of the city of Anaheim, Disneyland began hosting its own series of marathon races, under the banner of RunDisney. Races are held in the early morning hours, before the parks open. The route takes participants through both parks, the surrounding city streets, and past multiple character meet and greet photo locations.

When Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev visited the United States in 1959, his request to visit Disneyland was denied over security concerns. During a later press conference, Khrushchev publicly expressed his anger over being denied admittance. Walt also expressed his disappointed for not being able to show off his own submarine fleet.

When Walt Disney passed away on December 15, 1966, the world was shocked by the unexpected loss of a man who had brought joy to millions. On August 6, 1970, hundreds of counter-culture protestors invaded en masse, leading to one of the most infamous days in Disneyland history. After a "Black Panther breakfast" at Aunt Jemima's Kitchen, raiding the pirate ship in Fantasyland, and raising the Vietnam Flag over Tom Sawyer Island, an armed police squad was forced to close down the park.

Skyfest was a special event held by the city of Anaheim's chamber of commerce in 1985. To mark Disneyland's 30th anniversary celebration, the goal was to enter the Guinness book with the largest balloon release on record. Over 1,000,000 multi-colored balloons containing over seven-thousand pounds of helium were released over Disneyland.

During Memorial Day weekend in 1986,, a unique fund raising campaign to fight homelessness asked Americans to link hands in a continuous human chain across the continental United States. Disneyland has always been considered one of the most patriotic places in the United States, and over the years it has often celebrated the brave men and woman who have served in the U.S. armed services. A special parade was held in 1991 when battlefront troops returned home from the Gulf War following the end of Operation Desert Storm.

Marking the retirement of NASA's historic space shuttle program. during a three-day ceremonial flight across the United States, the Space Shuttle Endeavor flew over multiple southern California landmarks on September 12, 2012. Following the 2004 Athens' Summer Olympics, Disneyland welcomed multi-gold medal champion Michael Phelps and US Olympic swim team to exhibit their athleticism right down the middle of Main Street. A temporary swimming pool, 164 feet long , three lanes wide and holding nearly 104,000 gallons, spanned from Town Square to Central Plaza.
