At the northern end of Main Street, in the very center of park, is the hub of Disneyland, also known as Central Plaza. From here all paths to the distinctively themed realms of Disneyland begin. Shooting off like the cardinal points of a compass, guests depart from here to enter Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Frontierland and Fantasyland.

A 1956 theatrical short, which was part of Walt Disney's "People and Places" series of documentaries, featured Disneyland USA as it was in its first year of operation. After a horse car journey down Main Street USA, audiences arrived at the scenic plaza and its many pathways to further discovery and adventure found within the central hub.

A 1958 episode of the Disneyland TV series brought audiences on an exciting Adventure in the Magic Kingdom. After a flight with Tinkerbell from the Disney Studio to Anaheim, and an aerial preview of the park, guests traveled into Town Square, down Main Street, and into the Central Plaza Hub. From here many further adventures awaited you.

The horse-powered and motor engine driven vintage vehicles of the Main Street Transportation Company provide a scenic one-way trip from Town Square to the Central Hub via Main Street USA. These various modes of early 20th century transportation add to the overall kinetic energy and 4hustle and bustle of Central Plaza throughout the day.

The popular songs of early 20th century America provide a musical backdrop to the bustling activities of Central Plaza, and with no shortage of comfortable benches, the Hub is the ideal place to rest a spell and take in all the scenery. Many parents will send the kids off to have fun, and schedule a later reunion in this designated location.

6 - Plaza Ice Cream Vendor - Disney Frozen Treats 00:32
In Central Plaza one can find numerous vendors offering tempting snacks and refreshing sweet treats to satisfy almost any taste bud. A popular favorite are the ice cream carts that offer hard frozen goodies that have become park staples, such as the Mickey Mouse ice cream bar, lemonade and strawberry bars, frozen bananas, and ice cream sandwiches.

Disneyland has always been a feast for the senses, and one of the most popular snack time treats in the park taps into all five of them. There are several colorful popcorn wagons stationed throughout the Magic Kingdom and one of the busiest of these outdoor vending locations is in the very center of the park, right on the main hub.

8 - Plaza Churro Wagon 13:01
Disneyland turned the humble churro from what was once only regional fare, into a nationally recognized mainstay of theme park consumption. They first arrived in 1985 as a unique snack option for the new Videopolis stage. The never ending line at this single food cart led to more and more carts across the park, and it remains a favorite to this day.

9 - Partners Statue - Walt Disney Tribute 01:20
Located in the center of Central Plaza is a tribute to the man and the mouse that turned Disneyland from a dream into a reality. This "Partners" statue was designed and sculpted by legendary Disney Imagineer Blaine Gibson and was added to the park in 1993. It features Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse, hand in hand, surveying their kingdom.

10 - Central Plaza Bandstand - Disneyland Band Concert 17:19
The original Disneyland bandstand staged afternoon concerts with the Disneyland Band. It was first installed in the center of Town Square, but before opening day it was relocated to an area just off the Hub after Walt realized it obstructed the view of the castle. After two years, the gazebo was replaced by the Plaza Gardens dance pavilion.

11 - The Keystone Cops - Plaza Performance 16:45
Although it is surrounded by portals to all the distinctively themed realms in the park, the overriding theme of Central Plaza is an off-shoot to turn of the 20th century Main Street USA. Several musical groups associated with Main Street have also regularly appeared in the Hub, including the popular Keystone Cops saxophone ensemble.

Disneyland's own barbershop balladeers, the Dapper Dans have been a park tradition since 1959. Over the years, they have not only graced Main Street with their delightful harmonies, but will often travel to the Hub aboard their bicycle built for four, appearing at various positions throughout Central Plaza for impromptu performances.

Swift and Company, providers of quality beef, poultry and pork products, were once the sponsors of three venues in Disneyland: the turn of the century Market House on Main Street, the Plantation House restaurant in Frontierland, and what was once the park's most formal eatery, The Red Wagon Inn buffeteria style restaurant in Central Plaza.

14 - The Little Red Wagon - Disneyland Corn Dogs 02:33
In homage to the past, for many years an actual red wagon has been parked in front of what is now the Plaza Inn, but was once known as The Red Wagon Inn. From a side walk up window, this very popular little motor truck serves one of the park's most sought after and mouth watering delicacies, the world famous Disneyland Corn Dog.

Located at the far end of Main Street, facing the hub from the east side, is the Plaza Inn restaurant. The music heard within, and in the outdoor patio area surrounding this establishment, has consisted of a mixture of classical music, Broadway showtunes and other recognizable standards, all played in fully orchestrated arrangements.

Originally known as the Red Wagon Inn, the Plaza Inn is one of Disneyland's most luxuriant restaurants, with tufted velvet furnishings, silk woven draperies, ornate floral carpets, beveled mirrors, crystal chandeliers, carved wooden moldings, and polished brass fixtures, recreating the elegance and refinement of the Victorian age.

In earlier days, the Plaza Inn often hosted a live quartet to provide musical ambiance in the main dining room. This ensemble played in a unique style often referred to as Salon Music, popular during the early 20th century and commonly heard in the private tea rooms, palm courts, sporting clubs and the conservatories of the social elite.

A favorite for both young and old, Minnie and company host the popular character breakfast at the Plaza Inn Restaurant. These breakfasts are a special reservation only dining experience where parents and children have an opportunity to share an intimate encounter with their favorite Disney friends, take photos and collect autographs.

For over ten years, the Plaza Inn became Disneyland's birthday central, with special birthday parties hosted by a jovial master of ceremonies named Pat E. Cake until 2014.As he interacted with guests, a menagerie of Disney characters would also join in on the fun, culminating in the presentation of the cake and the singing of "Happy Birthday to You."

Disneyland has long affiliated with nationally recognized corporate brands to sponsor various venues throughout the park. A baby care center was included in the park since opening day to cater to those stroller bound visitors. In the early years this facility was sponsored by Pablum baby food company. Gerber took over sponsorship in the 1970's.

21 - Baby Center Atmosphere Music - The Jack Wagner Collection 16:17
The official Disneyland announcer, Jack Wagner, was also charged with producing appropriate musical backgrounds for various areas throughout the park. For the Baby Care Center he chose a random blend of peaceful easy listening tunes to establish a sense of calmness and serenity in this respite from the hustle and bustle of the park outside.

Many park guests are toddlers and infants. Parents love to experience the joy and wonder of the Magic Kingdom through the bright inquisitive eyes of their little ones. Catering to Disneyland's younger visitors is the Baby Care Center at the end of Main Street. Here parents can stock up on baby care supplies or set junior down for a nap.

At the western end of Main Street, facing Central Plaza, stands a Victorian gabled structure formerly known as the Plaza Pavilion restaurant. The entire establishment underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2012 as the Jolly Holiday Bakery Café, taking on a new aesthetic inspired by the Walt Disney classic, Mary Poppins.

When Disneyland first opened, the Plaza Pavilion was one of the most unique dining locations in the park. Guests entered a late Victorian themed building facing Central Plaza, but were led to the back side the building to dine under a thatched covered roof, facing the Adventureland jungle river, with live Hawaiian music as entertainment.

The gateway to Adventureland leads guests through a primitive bamboo and thatch roofed tribal archway, into an exotic realm of mystery, danger and haunting romance. The sounds of Adventureland consist of tropical birds, lions, tigers, elephants, apes, cascading waterfalls and the rhythmic beating of native drums. Disney sound engineers traveled the world over to capture the authentic sounds of exotic regions, and many of the recordings they produced in the 1950's are still heard in Adventureland today.

In 1963, Adventureland became the setting for the world's first Audio-Animatronic musical revue. Inviting visitors to experience this new era of electronic pixie dust was the Tiki Room's very own Barker Bird. Leaving the hub to enter Adventureland, guests were first greeted by the squeaks, squawks and corny jokes of this fine feathered friend.

The rustic entrance to Frontierland replicates a mid 19th century stockade log fort, as found throughout the untamed west during the Conestoga wagon days of America's historic past. Walt Disney dedicated this land in tribute to the faith, courage and ingenuity of the hearty pioneers who blazed the trails across this nation.

NEW 29 - Frontierland Gateway - Stockade Loop 03:41
Millions of Disneyland guests have passed under the Frontierland sign and through its stockade gate entrance. For decades, the stage for pioneering adventure was musically set with this upbeat western banjo tune playing on a continuous loop, underscored by the sound of steamboat whistles and rifle blasts at the nearby shootin' arcade.

30 - Frontierland Gateway - Calvary Gun Salute 00:41
The stockade fortress serving as gateway to Frontierland reminds park visitors of the brave soldiers of the U.S. Calvary who tamed the wild west, and several 19th century military relics are on display throughout these regimental barracks. This has also been the setting for many official presentations of arms ceremonies held by the Armed Forces.

An area just off the Hub, located behind Tomorrowland and Main Street USA, was once the planned site for Edison Square. This cul-de-sac would have included a walking tour of American homes, tracing the history of electricity from the early 1900's to the present day. The project was put on hold and eventually evolved into the Carousel of Progress.

Monsanto's all-plastic home of future living opened on the outskirts of Tomorrowland in 1957, flanking the hub, and overlooking a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired lakefront garden. Guests were invited to tour this model family residence to preview the latest concepts in design and construction, as well as new advancements in home appliances.

The entrance to the original Tomorrowland was once known as the Avenue of Flags. The flags flanking this pathway were the official colors from all 48 of the United States. At the end of the path was the World Clock, which showed the exact time for any spot on planet earth, and in the distance was the towering TWA rocket moonliner.

At the gateway to today's Tomorrowland is the Astro Orbiter. More than just a rocket ride, it is a kinetic structure inspired by the stories of Jules Verne, Orson Wells and other scientific visionaries. Entering this world of discovery, guests hear futuristic music interspersed with songs from Tomorrowland attractions both past and present.

35 - Alpine Gardens - Sounds of the Matterhorn 03:50
When the House of the Future was removed from the park in 1967, the former grounds became known as the Alpine Gardens. The towering Matterhorn provided the scenic backdrop to a small pond area surrounded by tiered bridges, rippling waterfalls and colorful flowers, the sound of the Abominable Snowman echoing in the distance.

Rising 145 feet tall, the majestic snow-capped Matterhorn is the highest point in all of Disneyland. It is also a 1/100th accurate scale replica of the original Swiss peak, and was the first man-made mountain ever constructed. Adding more authenticity, in past years the mountain was scaled by expert mountain climbers during peak operational seasons.

37 - Alpine Gardens - Swiss Polka Band 10:19
In the 1950's and '60's, a live Polka Band would entertain guests in designated areas throughout Fantasyland, but when the House of the Future was removed in 1967, they began to more commonly appear in the Hub, usually near the Tomorrowland entrance and in the adjacent Alpine Gardens, right in the shadow of the Matterhorn.

Sleeping Beauty Castle is not only the iconic architectural symbol of Disneyland; it also serves as gateway to Fantasyland. Guests entering this timeless land of enchantment experience a magical realm of imagination hopes and dreams, dedicated to the young and the young at heart, and to those who believe a wish upon a star can come true.

39 - Fantasyland Gateway - Castle Drawbridge Loop 03:17
The 1940 Oscar winning soundtrack version of "When You Wish Upon a Star," as sung by Jiminy Cricket, sets the tone for guests entering the land of Fantasy. Crossing the drawbridge over the moat and through the royal portico of Sleeping Beauty Castle, the theme song for the entire Disney organization can be heard on a continuous loop.

40- Snow White's Grotto - Area Background Music 10:23
In 1961, Walt Disney received an anonymous gift of 8 figurines carved in fine Italian marble. To display these exquisite Snow White characters in Disneyland, a grotto and wishing well area was erected on the eastern side of Sleeping Beauty Castle just off the main hub. Coins tossed in the well are donated to children's charities around the world.

41 - King Triton's Garden - Area Background Music 10:00
In 1996, the scenic pond area once known as the Alpine Gardens became King Triton's Garden upon the installation of new leaping fountains and unique water features based on the settings from Disney's classic animated feature, "The Little Mermaid." Emerging from the water was a statue of King Triton, pointing his golden trident in the air.

In a grotto adjacent to King Triton's Fountain, guests could meet the Little Mermaid herself, princess Ariel, at her giant seashell throne enclosed within a stylized coral reef. The area surrounding this popular character meet and greet was enlivened with music from the Academy Award winning score of Disney's animated film classic.

In 2008, the Alpine Gardens underwent yet another transformation, and today it is known as the enchanted glade of Pixie Hollow. Here guests magically shrink down to the size of a fairy and discover the secret garden home of Tinkerbell and her pixie friends, where they share many of the mysteries behind their magic.

The Sleeping Beauty Castle forecourt in Central Plaza has served as a backdrop for many special appearances by everyone's favorite British nanny, Mary Poppins, ever since the Academy Award winning Disney classic was first released in 1964. Today she and Bert the chimney sweep still make guest appearances here with the Pearly Band.

Disneyland's Pearly Band was inspired by a scene from the film Mary Poppins. Pearlies are a tradition derived from the British music halls of the mid 19th century, and are so named for their colorful costumes, adorned in white mother-of-pearl buttons. This brassy musical troupe has performed in the Hub's castle forecourt for many decades.

In July of 2015, the Disneyland Band underwent a major change. After six decades of marching through the Magic Kingdom, the original ensemble was revised with new energetic young musicians, all new marching routines, and a brand new sound. As with the original band, the new group performs daily in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

47 - Carnation Plaza Gardens - The Carnation Company 03:04
The Carnation Company, makers of ice cream and other dairy products, began its long Disneyland partnership as hosts of the Main Street ice cream parlor on opening day, lasting until decades thereafter. They also sponsored the Plaza Gardens bandstand in Central Plaza. Nods to this long partnership can still be found in the park to this day.

The Disneyland Band first began to perform in a scenic location, just to the west of Sleeping Beauty's Castle, as far back as the summer of 1955. In short order, the original bandstand once located in this spot was relocated, and replaced by the larger Plaza Gardens stage in 1956, but the daily concerts continued on for decades to come.

A crowd favorite for decades, the afternoon Disneyland Band concert at the Plaza Gardens included all the best from their musical repertoire. They were often joined by the Dapper Dans to perform a few numbers together, and the program always concluded with John Phillip Sousa's patriotic anthem, "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

At the end of Main Street, just off the central hub of Disneyland, stood a colorful bandstand once known as the Carnation Plaza Gardens. Since it premiered in 1956, it hosted some of the greatest Swing and Big Bands of all time. In the earlier years, mid-afternoon, "Soda Time," dances were often held for teens and young adults.

Since its premiere in 1956, the Carnation Plaza Gardens would play host to some of the greatest Swing and Big Band dance orchestras of all time. In 1957 it would become the focal point venue of the highly successful Date Nite promotional events, inviting young adults for an evening of moonlight dancing and enchantment under the stars.

The Elliot Brothers Orchestra and singer Tony Paris were the original regulars at the Carnation Plaza Gardens bandstand, a popular night spot where guests were always encouraged to join in and dance. The repertoire of The Elliot Brothers included swing, rock n roll, and a lively rendition of the traditional Mexican dance: the La Raspa.

The official voice of Disneyland, Jack Wagner, was heavily involved in the many live productions staged at the Plaza Gardens. While it was most notable for its after dark swing dances, during the day the stage also served as the perfect venue for live shows featuring the Disney characters and performances by visiting amateur organizations.

From the late 1970's and into the '90's one of the most popular live shows presented at the Plaza Gardens was known as the Fantasy Follies. This all-singing, all-dancing musical revue featured many original songs, as well as memorable favorites from the Disney songbook, and included special appearances by favorite Disney characters.

Decades before there was "Dancing with the Stars," a popular live show presented at Plaza Gardens featured the Disneyland Band and many favorite Disney characters in a special ballroom dance competition with Goofy as the master of ceremonies. Dances featured included the Fox Trot, a Latin Samba, a lively Polka and the Jitterbug.

Over the years, the Plaza Gardens stage often hosted visiting high school and college performing groups including glee clubs, dance recitalists and jazz bands. Among these visiting artists was also Disneyland's own All-Star College Band, a work study internship comprised of talented young music students from colleges nationwide.

For decades, Disney has offered a special program for musically talented youth from grades K-12. Students are given the opportunity to attend exclusive workshops led by members of Disney's entertainment cast, culminating in a live in-park performance. This Magic Music Days program is known today as Disney Imagination Campus.

By the 1970's and throughout the 1980's, the long standing tradition of hosting world famous swing bands at the Plaza Gardens evolved into an ongoing Summer concert series known as "Big Bands in Disneyland," featuring such greats as Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Artie Shaw, Les Brown, the Dorsey Brothers and Lionel Hampton.

59 - Carnation Plaza Gardens - Swing Bands in Disneyland 49:33
The tradition of Big Bands in Disneyland carried on throughout the 90's, and well into the new millennium, reinvigorated by a new wave in the popularity of swing dancing that was sweeping the nation. After the Plaza Gardens closed in 2012, the bands made a comeback the following year, in the form of "The Royal Ball" at the new Fantasy Faire.

The overwhelming popularity of the Disney animated classic, Beauty and the Beast, led to a live show presented at the Plaza Gardens stage featuring many songs from the Academy Award winning musical score. Belle served as host, and the supporting cast included characters from the film as well as Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy.

The latest addition to Disneyland's kingdom of Fantasy is the all-new Fantasy Faire village. The original Fantasy Faire was held inside the large amphitheater located at the northern end of Fantasyland, but in 2013 it was relocated to an area just beyond the castle walls facing Central Plaza, formerly known as the Carnation Plaza Gardens.

The new Fantasy Faire village has all the attention to detail found in the nearby castle courtyard, making it really feel like a part of the original Fantasyland. One of these little added touches is a large mechanical music box that is based on the Festival of Fools scene from the Disney animated feature, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

Landmarking the center of the Fantasy Faire Village grounds is a statue replicating Rapunzel's tower as it appeared in the Disney animated feature, Tangled. Cascading down its sides, in sculpture, are Rapunzel's enchanted strands of hair. After sunset her golden locks will periodically appear to magically shimmer and glow.

64 - Royal Hall - Greet the Princesses 1:40:50
The main attraction at Fantasy Faire is the Royal Hall. Here guests have a chance for some great personal encounters and photo opportunities, for found within these regal rooms are favorite Disney princesses from classic animated films. The current royal roster includes Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Ariel from the Little Mermaid.

- Fantasy Faire Royal Theatre -
A remnant of the original Plaza Gardens is the circular dance floor and bandstand covered in its colorful round canopy. However, it has been re-purposed as the new Royal Theatre where live shows reenacting classic Disney stories, such as Tangled, Beauty and the Beast and Frozen, are staged several times daily. The comical hosts, Mr. Smythe and Mr. Jones present these shows blending Vaudeville with a Shakespearean style.
