Star Wars hit theaters in 1977, at the very height of the Disco craze. An unusual ensemble known as Meco recorded highlights from John Williams' score, in a distinctively Disco style, which became a top hit on radio stations nationwide. They were soon invited to play their Space Age symphony at the new Space Stage amphitheater in Tomorrowland.

In the early 80's, riding the wave of the recent Star Wars phenomenon, Disneyland's entertainment division assembled a sci-fi themed rock concert band featuring costumed performers noticeably reminiscent of the George Lucas blockbuster. Their popular live shows at the Space Stage included synthesized sound effects, lasers and pyrotechnics.

- Buena Vista Records - Star Wars Storyteller Albums -

 

A 1977 long-playing record was released by 20th Century Fox, retelling the Star Wars story. Buena Vista Records, a pseudonym of Disneyland Records, obtained publication and production rights for the storyteller albums released in conjunction with Empire Strikes Back, reissuing the 1977 Star Wars album along with two new albums based on the 1980 sequel. In 1984, a fourth storyteller album was released for Return of the Jedi.

- Buena Vista Records - Star Wars Read-Along Albums -

 

Before Disneyland the park would begin its affiliation with the Star Wars franchise, Disneyland the record label (Buena Vista) produced a series of children's read-along albums. In a licensing agreement running from 1979 though 1985, a total of ten "little long-playing records" were released, including retellings of the movie stories, new adventures featuring the Star Wars characters and two primary educational albums.

Star Tours had the first fully themed and immersive queue in a Disney attraction. Adding to the theming were two G2 worker droids who spoke directly to passing guests. These sociable robots were in fact recycled geese from the America Sings attraction. They were relocated while the show continued to run for more than year after Star Tours debuted.

Through corporate acquisition, the Walt Disney Company now owns the rights to many outside franchises, including Star Wars and the beloved Muppets. As an uncanny bit of foreshadowing, season four of the classic Muppet Show was hosted by none other than the stars of Star Wars, Mark Hamill,(aka Luke Skywalker) C3PO and R2D2.

Months before the grand opening of Star Tours in Disneyland, TV audiences got a first look at the park's up and coming 'E' Ticket intergalactic adventure. A special episode of "The Disney Sunday Movie" was opened by an unusually musical C3PO in a rap session with R2D2, followed by a first ever sneak peak of the attraction nearing completion.

In 1987, Disney launched an intensive marketing campaign to announce the opening of Disneyland's latest attraction. This included press releases, ads in printed media and TV commercials. The advertising slogan, "Now the Adventure is Real," explained how this was your opportunity to experience Star Wars in a totally new and immersive way.

For the first nine years of its operation, Disneyland's Star Tours had a unique feature that no other version of the attraction in any other Disney park had. Guests riding aboard the PeopleMover rode through the show building, affording a sneak peak of the immersive queue area as C3PO and R2D2 welcomed travelers to the Tomorrowland Spaceport.

The launching of a whole new era in theme park entertainment began on January 9th 1987. The festivities kicked off with a preview event featuring Mickey Mouse welcoming C3PO and R2D2 to the Disney family. The park remained open an unprecedented 60 hours, as guest waited to ride Star Tours in a line stretching out to the park entrance.

As the line to see the newest 'E' ticket adventure stretched all the way from Tomorrowland to the parking lot, live entertainment covered every corner of Disneyland on the day the original Star Wars premiered. The usual musical groups were out in force as well as some unusual intergalactic visiting bands that guests may have found oddly familiar.

To begin the official opening ceremonies of Star Tours, several well-known characters reenacted scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy. Then R2D2 and C3PO introduced George Lucas, Michael Eisner, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse in their space cadet attire. Using a light saber, sparks flew as together they cut through the ceremonial ribbon.

Star Tours guests first enter a "spaceport" of the future, not unlike a modern day airport, with departing commercial flights set for destinations in a far away galaxy. Adding to the fun, guests view travel and tourism ads for distant planets on a large overhead monitor as C3PO and R2D2 have a comical back and forth as they repair a damaged StarSpeeder.

As travelers wind their way through the immersive Star Tours queue, they soon find themselves in a droid repair bay. Here they are greeted by friendly R2 worker droids, diligently repairing other droids in disrepair. To pass the time, one of these droids has a boom box tuned into station K-DROID, FM, playing the latest intergalactic pop tunes.

At the 2nd sector droid unit repair bay, a pair of underproductive and extremely sociable worker droids are constantly distracted by all the curious humanoids staring at them, halting their activities to chat with all the onlookers. These robots were fashioned from the inner skeletons of two former America Sings Audio-Animatronic performers.

As guests pass through the turnstile, an astro-attendant directs them to their departing gates. On a monitor above they watch as their StarSpeeder 3000 is being prepped for takeoff. Shortly before boarding, a safety video reminds guests to buckle their safety restraints, stow luggage beneath their seats and to follow all intergalactic regulations.

Star Tours was inspired by the classic Star Wars films, and was the very first theme park attraction to use flight simulation technology. On board the StarSpeeder 3000, a rookie pilot droid brings guests on a harrowing flight into deep space, encountering giant ice crystals and laser blasting fighters, before defeating the Imperial Death Star.

After surviving a harrowing journey to the moon of Endor and back, travelers exited their StarSpeeder through a long corridor reminiscent of a modern day air terminal. Lining the walls were colorful posters of travel destinations offered through Star Tours. Making their way to the gift shop, guests heard memorable theme music from the Star Wars films.

From the moment guests enter the Tomorrowland Spaceport, until the moment they exit the attraction, music plays a pivotal role in the themed experience of Star Tours. Much of this music was inspired by John Williams' original score, cleverly combined with a mix of original music to subconsciously set the mood for this unique space travel adventure.

Mickey's Star Trader is located at the exit to Star Tours; therefore a good portion of the store is devoted to Star Wars merchandise. The atmosphere music often heard here is by Moog synthesizer pioneers Jean-Jacques Perry and Gershon Kingsley, the same collaborators behind the theme music of the Main Street Electrical Parade.

38 - Jedi Training Academy - Young Jedi Recruitment  17:12

 

Beginning in 2007, a new interactive experience for Disneyland's younger guests was presented several times a day at the Tomorrowland Terrace. Before each training session was about to commence, approximately 16 children were selected to participate as Jedi trainees. Each young recruit was then presented with Jedi robes and lightsabers.

As the Jedi Training Academy demonstration began, the young recruits were given lessons in the ways of the force and the basics in lightsaber combat skills, before Darth Vader, Darth Maul and the Stormtroopers interrupted the exercises. After the children helped fend off these intergalactic saboteurs they each became honorary Jedi knights.

Initially, Star Tours was a controversial addition among park purists, as the first non Disney property to inspire a Disneyland attraction. Upon its overwhelming success, doubts were quickly cast aside as it became an integral part of the park experience. Even the park's live bands would incorporate music into their sets from this beloved franchise.

41 - Star Tours: The Adventures Continue - Grand Opening Ceremony  07:03

 

After continuous flights to Endor for over 24 years, a fully updated version of Star Tours would premiere at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland in 2011. The new adventure was first launched in Florida, with a special grand re-opening event. Only days later, the Disneyland original would also reopen with a special ceremony for park guests.

The simulator technology involved in the original Star Tours attraction would finally live up to its full potential with the launch of Star Tours 2.0, when a series of new destinations and multiple story lines were finally added to the experience. To promote Star Wars: The Adventures Continue a very clever ad campaign was created featuring Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers. They were shown throughout Disneyland, enjoying the park just like the average guest would, but in full costume and in full character. This humorous commercial would go viral on YouTube and the internet.

The 1987 ad slogan for Star Tours was, "Now the Adventure is Real," so when creating a tag line to differentiate 2.0 from 1.0, the choice seemed obvious. Hearkening back to the original, the new experience would officially be named "Star Tours: The Adventures Continue." A new commercial also paid homage to the original 1987 TV ad.

Star Tours has consistently been one of the most popular Disneyland attractions since 1987. Even on a moderate day of attendance, the queue can stretch far beyond the main entrance. Until 2011 no area music could be heard outside the indoor spaceport, but for 2.0, a special mix of John Williams' Star Wars classics was added to the extended queue.

A large screen on the northern wall of the Tomorrowland spaceport entertains guests as they await their Star Tour adventure. The screen displays a loop of travel and tourism ads. But in keeping with the theme, all of the destinations being promoted are within the Star Wars universe, including Dagobah, the Moon of Endor and the snow planet of Hoth.

Quite a bit of new music was incorporated into the indoor spaceport queue area for Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Much of this was used as underscore for the travel and tourism ads displayed on a large overhead monitor as well as general mood music throughout the attraction, much of it based on or inspired by the original Star Tours.

The G2 worker droids from the original Star Tours have been promoted, and are now working for spaceport security. On a nearby monitor guests can view the X-Ray results as a droid scans through passenger luggage. While performing his duties, he fraternizes with onlookers while commenting on the bizarre contents of their checked bags.

With the launch of Star Tours 2.0, a new interactive guest experience was added to the surrounding area. Guest waiting in line for Star Tours, or perusing the Tomorrowland, vicinity may have an unexpected encounter with the stormtroopers of the Imperial guard, who give out stern commands and exchange insults with bewildered onlookers.

In October of 2012, the Star Wars universe officially joined the house of mouse when the Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm for an estimated 4 billion dollars. Among the Star Wars fan community feelings were mixed. Many feared the "Disneyfication" of the beloved franchise, and in short order many spoofs and musical parodies hit the web.

RunDisney is a series of Disney sponsored highly anticipated marathon events that take place on Disney property. Open to everyone for a registration fee, all runners receive collectable metals and can meet and greet with rare characters all along the track. In 2012 the first annual Star Wars themed half marathon was held at Disneyland.

In 2015, all of Tomorrowland received a temporary overlay called Season of the Force. This included special banners and signage throughout the land, the premiere of the Star Wars: Launch Bay exhibit, a Star Wars overlay of Space Mountain, a compilation of Star Wars scenes shown at the Tomorrowland Theater, special food and live entertainment.

The Season of the Force was musically enhanced with a blending of many beloved John Williams' instrumental themes from the Star Wars movie franchise. This iconic music could be heard throughout all of Tomorrowland, including over at the Tomorrowland Terrace outdoor restaurant, which was temporarily renamed the "Galactic Grill."

What was formerly the Innoventions building received a major refurbishment in 2015. Today it is known as Star Wars: Launch Bay. Inside, on display are countless props and costumes used in the making of the Star Wars, and meet and greet areas with characters from both the dark side and light side of the force. Some of the well-known settings from the Star Wars universe have also been replicated, including the infamous Cantina bar.

Tomorrowland's indoor theater, former venue for such 3-D attractions as "Captain EO" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience," presented a special compilation of scenes from the Star Wars franchise as part of Season of the Force. The film showcased memorable moments from each episode in order to explore the mystical force of the Jedi knights.

Season of the Force included a new Space Mountain overlay utilizing indoor projection mapping of classic Star Wars scenes set to the music of John Williams. On May the 4th, 2018, a popular Star Wars themed presentation began performances several times daily in Tomorrowland after its debut during the Disneyland After Dark, Star Wars Nite event. Captain Phasma and her menacing band of Stormtroopers emerge from the Star Wars Launch Bay and march throughout the Tomorrowland area.

Disneyland began hosting a series of special ticket after hours events in early 2018. Each of these "Disneyland After Dark" events is given a unique theme including an evening that was devoted to Star Wars. To better manage crowd flow, a temporary reservation only system allows guests to enter the land at a designated and limited time block. On the evening of May 29th 2019, a special dedication ceremony was held to officially open Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. The new Droid Depot in Galaxy's Edge is a truly out of this world, and completely immersive retail experience. On a slow moving conveyor belt, guests can choose from a series of odd looking spare parts in order to build their very own customized Star Wars themed droid robot. Each droid is fully operational, and controlled via remote device.

The new Oga's Cantina bar at Galaxy's Edge features a familiar friend, RX-24, aka Rex from the original Star Tours. Still voiced by Paul Rubens, our former rookie pilot has been reprogrammed and now serves as the cantina disc jockey, R3X. The upbeat songs he spins to entertain a motley group of intergalactic clientele are simply out of this world.

Rise of the Resistance is the most complex and advanced attraction ever designed by Disney Imagineering, placing guests in the middle of an altercation between the rebel Resistance and the First Order. This 'E' ticket adventure features several inter-working experiences, including a trackless dark ride, motion simulator, and drop ride system.
