2 - Frontierland Attraction Preview - Jack Wagner  2:06

Jack Wagner provides an orientation and preview of this land of the western frontier, from its pioneer village and dance-hall saloon, to its wilderness trails and runaway mine trains, to its rafts carrying guests to an island of boyhood adventure, and its Mississippi paddle wheeler that plies the banks of a mighty river.

3 - Frontierland Stockade Entrance  1:02

The gateway to Frontierland is styled after a 19th century U.S. Calvary fortress, as often found throughout the American southwest in the days of our westward expansion. Just inside this pine log portal way flies an American flag with its original field of 13 stars, paying homage to our first period of independence.

4 - Frontierland Stockade - Area Background Music  4:23

Within the wood logged fortress at the Frontierland portal, and around the adjacent pioneer trading post, and Davy Crockett western mercantile, guests hear a selection of traditional patriotic songs from the ninetenth century. These musical variations were also featured in the award-winning Ken Burns documentary "The Civil War."

5 - Frontierland Promenade - Area Background Music  1:04:51

As guest walk the main thoroughfare of a frontier town, amidst wood planked sidewalks and tumbling tumbleweeds, they will find an old fashioned mercantile, a shootin' arcade and a western dance hall saloon. The mood is further set with the sounds of strumming guitars playing familiar songs of the cowboy era.

6 - Frontierland Promenade - Hollywood Western Theme Music  6:10

When Disneyland Paris opened in 1992, many of its newly created area music loops were also used in the original Disneyland for several years. The French version of Frontierland was greatly inspired by the romance of America's movie westerns, and was backdropped by the epic theme music associated with these Hollywood classics.

7 - Frontierland Promenade - The Sons of the Pioneers  10:42

Also heard along the Frontierland promenade were several vintage recordings of classic cowboy songs, as perfomed by the chart topping vocal group the Sons of the Pioneers. Included among their well-known repertoire are several Disney songs, resulting from their long association with Disney both on film and in records.

8 - Frontierland Area Music - The Jack Wagner Collection  11:48

In addition to being the "Voice of Disneyland," at one time Jack Wagner was also reponsible for providing all the background music heard throughout the park. The music that he personally selected for Frontierland was an eclectic mix of American folkmusic, traditional bluegrass, country & western, and honky tonk saloon music.

9 - Slue Foot Sue's Golden Horseshoe - Stage Show Announcement  0:56

Frontierland's Golden Horseshoe was the longtime home to the Golden Horseshoe Revue, a stage production hearkening back to the days of the western dance hall. Premiering in 1955, it ran consecutively for over thirty years, entering the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running live stage show in recorded history.

10 - Golden Horseshoe Preshow - Magic Lantern Picture Show  9:09

The beautiful interior of the Golden Horseshoe was modeled closely after the western saloon set featured in the Hollywood musical, Calamity Jane. Before the main show began, a "magic lantern" slide show provided comical diversion as bar hostesses served hamburgers, french fries, ice-cold Pepsi and other non-alcoholic beverages.

11 - Slue Foot Sue's Golden Horseshoe Revue  19:50

The original Golden Horseshoe Revue starred Betty Taylor as Slue Foot Sue, the girlfriend to famed cowboy legend Pecos Bill, Wally Boag as a comical traveling salesman and Donald Novis as the genial Irish tenor. This family friendly show also included beautiful Can-Can dancers and occasional performing guests.

12 - Golden Horseshoe Stage - The Rhythm Brothers  14:23

This ensemble had the unusual distinction of performing as two other live bands in Disneyland during a simultaneous period, and were also known as the Main Street Maniacs and the Big Thunder Boys. When the regular Golden Horseshoe Revue took a day off, they often appeared as the Rhythm Brothers in a Roaring 20's themed show.

13 - Golden Horseshoe Stage - Billy Hill and the Hillbillies  11:40

When the original Golden Horseshoe Revue retired in 1986, it was soon replaced by the Golden Horseshoe Jamboree, a similar type of show with an all-new cast and musical score. Later, in the 90's, the Horseshoe became permanent home to a fantastic and highly comical bluegrass quartet known as Billy Hill and the Hillbillies.

14 - Golden Horseshoe Stage - The All-New Woody's Roundup  9:41

In 1999, Billy Hill temporarily relocated to a stage at the Big Thunder Ranch, and an all-new stage show based on the popular characters from the animated Disney/Pixar Toy Story franchise took center stage at the Golden Horseshoe. Much of the show was cleverly presented in black and white, as it simulated a live television broadcast.

15 - The Golden Horseshoe - Chris Calabrese Ragtime Medley  4:20

In recent years, the Golden Horseshoe bar has been open for lunch counter service and a ragtime pianist is often on hand to provide live mealtime entertainment. This upbeat medley, evocative of what one would hear, features several songs written for the classic stage show. They are performed by ragtime virtuoso, Chris Calabrese.

16 - Frontierland Shootin' Exposition  4:43

The Frontierland shooting gallery first opened in July of 1957. In 1985 it was replaced with the new "Frontier Shooting Exposition," using newly available infrared riffles, synthesized digital sound effects, and amusing animation, thus eliminating not only the hazardous lead shots and lead dust, but the need for nightly repainting.

17 - Casa de Fritos - Frito Kid and Klondike  2:01

Frontierland's Mexican restaurant was originally sponsored by the Frito-Lay corporation, and thus, it was called Casa de Fritos. One unusual feature of this establishment was a coin operated chip dispenser, in which the Frito Kid, and his trusty horse Klondike, distributed Frito's corn chips to guests at the drop of a coin.

18 - Los Mariachis De San Marcos  4:13

Another favorite feature at the Casa de Fritos restaurant were the sounds of live Mariachi bands.that performed traditional Mexican fiesta music at a bandstand located in the patio area adjacent to the main dining area. A popular group who often appeared at this Latin American themed venue was Los Mariachis de San Marcos.

19 - Casa Mexicana Area Background Music  5:20

In the 1980's Casa de Fritos became Casa Mexicana when Frito-Lay ended its long time sponsorship of the restuarant. The menu and atmosphere changed little, offering typical Mexican/American favorites such as tacos and buritos with plenty of refried beans. The area music was adapted from Disney and Spanish flavored popular songs.

20 - Rancho Del Zocalo - Area Background Music  17:41

When Frontierland's Mexican eatery underwent a major refurbishment in 2001, it was renamed Rancho Del Zocalo, as the patio area where this restaurant now sits was once known as El Zocalo plaza in Disneyland's earlier days. The new Spanish American architectural details recall the legendary tales of Zorro and  Don Quixote.

21 - The Miniature Horse Coral  4:53

The early Frontierland included a small petting farm where guests could get aquainted with the specially bred miniature horses that pulled many of the wagon type vehicles on Main Street and Frontierland. It was also the backdrop for a special opening day hoedown with Davy Crockett durring the live 1955 opening day broadcast.

22 - Rainbow Ridge - Area Background Music  9:27

The queue area for the original Rainbow Caverns mine train, as well as the pack mules, Contestoga wagons, and stagecoaches through the painted desert, was located inside the little mining town of Rainbow Ridge. The music often heard here harkened back to the days of the western dancehall, with its honky tonk style saloon music..

23 - Rainbow Ridge - Town Chatter  4:40

The Rainbow Ridge waiting area of the Frontierland mine train ride offered a real taste of daily life in the wild wild west. Here guests would overhear the sounds of many town residents, including a snoring guest at the El Dorado Hotel, a raucous bar fight at the Last Chance Saloon and the painful reverberations of a dentist's drill.

24 - Rainbow Ridge Mine Train - Ticket Announcements  1:41

The original Frontierland mine train ride was inspired by many of Walt Disney's Academy Award winning True Life Adventure documentaries, including The Living Desert, Bear Country, In Beaver Valley and The Vanishing Prairie. Guests could also see the painted desert aboard pack mules, stagecoaches, and Conestoga wagons.

25 - The Painted Desert - Frontierland Suite  10:01

This instrumental suite is a medley of western themed songs from various Walt Disney studio productions, and was featured on the 1956 Disneyland record album entitled, Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland. It brings us on a musical tour of the Frontierland of the 1950's, with its fondly remembered painted desert.

26 - Mine Train Though Nature's Wonderland  7:40

In 1961, Walt Disney expanded his mine train with several additional scenes that incorporated dozens of realistic Audio-Animatronic animals, including prairie dogs, beavers, grizzly bears, rattle snakes, coyotes, fighting elk and mountain lions. Disney vocal artist Dal McKennon provided on-board narrative as a lovable old prospector.

27 - The Rainbow Caverns  8:02

The stunning Rainbow Caverns served as the climactic finale to Frontierland's original mine train ride. Walt Disney commissioned background animation artist Claude Coats to create the cavern's colorful waterfalls. Through special illuminated dyes, and under black lighting, the cascading waters would take on a magic glow.

28 - Big Thunder Mountain - Area Background Music  11:43

The wild west became a whole lot wilder in 1979 when the Big Thunder runaway mine train replaced the Nature's Wonderland mine train. It's towering desert buttes have since become a Disneyland landmark. A collection of cowboy folk songs and showtunes from western themed Walt Disney films provide the musical backdrop.

29 - Big Thunder - Town Chatter  5:19

One noticeable remnant from Frontierland's original mine train ride is the miniature mining town of Rainbow Ridge, known today as Big Thunder. Just as before, several town residents can be overheard in a series of musical interludes and comical one-liners, including several barbershop melodies by the famous Dapper Dans.

30 - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad  5:25

Hold onto your hats and glasses for a rip-roarin', white knuckle runaway mine train ride through the wild western wilderness. Race through dark bat caves and mine shafts, over rocky desert mountains and fossilized sand buttes, and straight through an active earthquake, before splashing down in an old frontier boom town.

31 - The Big Thunder Boys - Bluegrass Band  2:47

When Big Thunder Mountain premiered in 1979, Disneyland's live musical group known as the Bluegrass Boys, became the Big Thunder Boys. They specialized in traditional bluegrass and standard country tunes. A 1920's jazz ensemble known as the Main Street Maniacs was comprised from the same members of this group.

32 - Big Thunder Ranch - Area Background Music  15:05

The northernmost section of Frontierland, in an area once occupied by the painted desert segment of the Nature's Wonderland Mine Train, is a working horse ranch open to Disneyland visitors. The area was once slated for a major expansion which included a new themed area to be called Discovery Bay, but it was never realized.

33 - Big Thunder Ranch - Halloween Area Background Music  13:50

A new tradition has begun at Big Thunder Ranch every Halloween season. The ranch is decorated with a festive harvest motif including inventively carved pumpkins, and a live show features characters from the popular Toy Story films. The special area music heard includes songs from the popular children's album, Woody's Round-up.

34 - Big Thunder Ranch - Animal Petting Farm  1:44

Known as the home of the "Happiest Horses on Earth," this functioning ranch serves as the living quarters to the many horses that service Disneyland guests. Also within the grounds is a recreation of an 1880's farm house, a blacksmith and harness maker at work, and a petting farm with chicken's, cows, pigs, goats and sheep.

35 - Big Thunder Barbecue - Area Background Music  9:48

Adjacent to the Big Thunder Ranch, surrounded by pine trees and a split rail fence, this outdoor barbecue specializes in hickory smoked dishes served chuck wagon style. The atmosphere is filled with the romantic glow and crackle of a campfire as well as the sound of  chirping crickets, howling coyotes and the fabled songs of the old west.
