From the beginning, Disneyland has offered an amazing array of live entertainment throughout the park, a tradition that continues to this day. The park's regular roster of in-house performers includes something to please all musical tastes, from barbershop balladeers, to roving Dixieland and marching bands, and good old-time rock 'n' roll.

- The Disney Characters -

 The Disney characters have been meeting and greeting with Disneyland guests since opening day in 1955. Over time they have evolved, as the cast has grown in numbers. These hugable friends represent that special sort of magic that sets the Disney parks apart from the rest, allowing youngsters to meet their favorite animated pals in person, and giving adults a chance to recapture special memories from their own youth.

15 - The Golden Horseshoe Revue  26:06

The Golden Horseshoe, a vaudevillian style dancehall revue of the old west, was Disneyland's very first live stage show, premiering on opening day in 1955 and running daily until 1986. It set the Guinness World Record as the longest running stage show, with the most consecutive performances in history, a record that still stands today.

16 - The Mickey Mouse Club Circus  2:20

Thursday afternoons were known as "Circus Day" on the original Mickey Mouse Club Television show. This would soon be brought to Disneyland as well in the Mickey Mouse Club Circus, a three-ring big top extravaganza that opened in late 1955. The live show featured traditional circus acts, animals, clowns and the real Mouseketeers.

17 - Mickey Mouse Club Circus - Area Background Music  58:30

Walt Disney loved the circus as a boy. This fond memory became part of his early plans for Disneyland, and this is why he presented a full-scale circus on the outskirts of Fantasyland. However, much to Walt's dismay, it never quite caught on, as most guests didn't want to invest there time in a two hour circus, with a whole Disneyland to see.

18 - Professor George J. Keller's Jungle Killers - Show Announcement  1:27

Although the Mickey Mouse Club Circus ran for only one season, one very popular act from the original show would return for another year: Professor George J. Keller and his ferocious jungle cats. This was a scaled down version of the original three-ring production which was presented in the same circus tent throughout 1956.

A highly anticipated annual event held in Disneyland throughout the 1960's was the Dixieland in Disneyland music festival along the Rivers of America.Special guest stars included  The Strawhatters, Teddy Buckner, Louis Armstrong, The Dukes of Dixieland, The Young Men from New Orleans and the famous Firehouse Five Plus Two.

20 - Cavalcade of Big Bands  1:05:44

Disneyland's Cavalcade of Big Bands was a live concert series that was first held in 1962. Many legendary bands from the golden age of swing music made special guest appearances at this event, including such greats as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Tex Beneke, Les Brown, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman and Duke Ellington.

Riding on the wave of the1960's folk music revival, Disneyland's Hootenanny music festivals were an ongoing series of special ticketed events featuring an array of talented young folk artists, including The Yachtsmen, The Stoneman Family, The Back Porch Majority, The Goose Creek Symphonic Band and The Greenwood County Singers.

22 - Fantasyland Theater - Humdinger  1:20:22

In the 1960's, part of the Summer evening's festivities was staged at the Fantasyland Theater, where a live concert, called the "Humdinger" featured a program of popular musical stars of the day, including Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Young Rascals, Leslie Gore, Neil Diamond, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and the Humdinger Dancers.

23 - The Kids of the Kingdom - Tomorrowland Stage  24:16

In 1967, a regular feature of the newly updated Tomorrowland was a troupe of talented young singers known as the Kids of the Kingdom. They often performed at a large new outdoor theater known as the Tomorrowland Stage. Many new generations of this group have continued to perform in Disneyland and Walt Disney World for decades.

24 - Country Music Jubilee  1:48:48

"Country Music Jubilee" was an ongoing Disneyland concert series held at the Tomorrowland Stage. Every week, the greatest stars in Country & Western music were invited to perform a live program of down home music. These performances began in 1966 and continued well into the 1980's, and were a huge draw for local guests.

25 - Show Me America - Old Broadway Medley  5:28

In celebration of the Disneyland's 15th anniversary in 1970, the Magic Kingdom presented its very first full-scale live musical stage show revue. Show Me America was a musical tour acrosss the United States complete with elaborate original set pieces, lavish costumes, Broadway caliber live performers and a live full orchestra.

26 - The Great American Music Machine  1:41:00

Beginning in 1972, the Tomorrowland Stage hosted another concert series featuring an unusual set piece known as the "Music Machine." Following an opening dance routine featuring said machine, popular artists would perform a live concert. Special guests included such favorites as The Carpenters, The Jackson 5 and The Osmond Brothers.

27 - Lady America/Center City USA - Musical Highlights  17:22

To honor America's bicentennial, the Kids of the Kingdom were featured in two patriotic musical revues, Lady America and Center City USA. Each production was  filled with novelty showtunes, contemporary pop, and country style music. Also featured was a new Sherman Brother's song "The Glorious Fourth," written for the 1976 celebration.

28 - It's Showtime - The New Mickey Mouse Club  15:29

In the late 1970's, Disneyland served as special headquarters for the all-new Mickey Mouse Club, and much of the series was filmed right inside the park. Every Friday episode was "Showtime" day, and the Plaza Gardens hosted live talent shows that featured both the regular Mouseketeer cast, as well as specially invited guest stars.

29 - Mouseketeer Days - Mickey Mouse Club Reunion Show  15:35

The original Mouseketeers first performed at Disneyland on opening day in1955. Over the years they would make numerous guest appearances. Disneyland began hosting "Mouseketeer Days" in 1980, and many original cast members returned to Disneyland yet again to perform in a Mickey Mouse Club 25th anniversary live stage show.

30 - The Kids of the Kingdom - The Disney Medley  21:34

The original Tomorrowland Stage was refurbished  in the late seventies as part of the new Space Mountain Concourse, and was renamed the Space Stage. One of the earliest shows in this new venue featured the Kids of the Kingdom in a tribute to the memorable songs featured in Walt Disney's classic films, from Snow White to Mary Poppins.

31 - Disneyland is Your Land  23:17

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Disneyland, an elaborate stage show with original songs was perfromed by the Kids of the Kingdom and the Disney characters on the new Space Stage in Tomorrowland. Each themed land in the park was highlighted through music, costumes and dance. It returned in 1985 for the 30th anniversary celebration.

32 - Show Biz Is  25:23

Show Biz was first presented in Tomorrowland, and after a few years hiatus, returned to the new Videopolis amphitheater in Fantasyland. The show featured the Kids of the Kingdom and was a musical tribute to many popular forms of American entertainment, both past and present, covering everything from Vaudeville to the Silver Screen.

33 - Kids of the Kingdom - World Friendship Medley  10:10

The Kids of the Kingdom often traveled outside the Kingdom to perform at special events and corporate conventions held right next door at the Disneyland Hotel. On stage at the Embassy Ballroom they showcased many of the popular shows also seen in the park, as well as special production numbers like the "World Friendship Medley."

34 - Festival Japan  19:00

From 1977 to 1983 Disneyland held an annual festival honoring the customs and traditions of Japan. This popular weekend long event hosted international and local groups who presented live musical entertainment, dancing, native cuisine, traditional arts and crafts, a special parade and a dramatic evening  fireworks display.

35 - Festival Mexico  22:31

From the mid to late seventies, both local and international cultural groups were invited to Disneyland to participate in another international festival honoring the customs and traditions of the people of Mexico. Like the Japan festival, this annual event featured live entertianment, cultural exhibits, a special parade and a spectacular fireworks finale.

36 - Plaza Gardens Stage - Fantasy Follies  21:27

From the late 1970's and into the '90's one of the most popular live shows presented at the Plaza Gardens was known as the Fantasy Follies. This all-singing, all-dancing musical revue featured many original songs, as well as memorable favorites from the Disney songbook, and included special appearances by  favorite Disney characters.

37 - Videopolis Dance Party  6:11

Located at the northern outskirts of Fantasyland and just steps away from It's a Small World, this amazing outdoor dance complex first opened in 1985 and was a favorite night spot for the MTV generation. Exciting dance parties were held nightly featuring popular live bands and TV monitors that displayed the latest music videos.

38 - Live on Stage - All-Star Performances  54:01

Some of the biggest names in musical entertainment appeared at the Videopolis stage and other venues throughout Disneyland during the 80's including The Pointer Sisters, Kool and the Gang,Donna Summer, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Boy George, Adam Ant, Kenny Loggins, Robert Palmer and New Kids on the Block.

39 - Videopolis Theatre - Area Background Music  10:13

Not as popular with the over thirty and under twelve crowd, over time the Videopolis teen dance parties were phased out and the theater space was utilized more often for family friendly live theatrical events often featuring the Disney characters. Heard here is the style of music one could expect to hear while waiting for the next show to begin.

40 - Snow White - Singin' Dancin' Heigh-Ho  20:54

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the milestone motion picture, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, a live production was staged at Videopolis, in one of the earliest regularly scheduled daytime shows ever presented in this theater. The show featured singing and dancing to all the memorable songs from Walt Disney's classic film.

- Circus Fantasy -

From 1986 through 1988, Disneyland held an annual Circus Fantasy event that brought the big top back to the Magic Kingdom on a grand scale. Park-wide, guests would find live acrobatic acts, a human cannonball, clowns aplenty and animal stunt shows. There was a daily procession down Main Street in the tradition of of an old fashioned circus parade and Videopolis hosted a special Circus Fantasy stage show.

- The Disneyland State Fair -

 Another seasonal event that ran from 1987-1988 was the Disneyland State Fair. To turn the park into an old-fashioned  fairground, at the front of the Main Street train station a large Ferris Wheel was erected, and carnival games and blue ribbon exhibits could be found throughout the park. At Big Thunder Ranch there was a special pig racing event called Pig Mania, and every afternoon guests could enjoy the Come to the Fair Parade.

Before the more elaborate Blast to the Past promotional events in 1988 and 1989, there were often special ticketed music festivals held in Disneyland where many rock 'n' roll bands from the 1950's were on hand to perform throughout the park. These events were often hosted by Dick Clark and included both well-known headliners and local talent.

- Blast to the Past -

 Blast to the Past was a park-wide special seasonal event held in both 1988 and 1989 that brought Disneyland guests back to the fabulous fifties with live entertianment, a daily parade, and special visting guest stars like Chubby Checker and Sha-Na-Na. The submarine voyage even received a special new 1950's soundtrack and a beach party was staged in front of It's a Small World with Beach Boys cover band Papa Doo Run Run.

The Kids of the Kingdom would return to the Disneyland stage in 1989 to star in "One Man's Dream," a journey through the many fantasy worlds of Walt Disney imagination, featuring big scale production mumbers, lavish costumes and sets. Although it had only a limited time engagment, the show lived on for well over a decade at Tokyo Disneyland.

60 - Dick Tracy's G-Men Quintet  12:59

A sunglasses, fedora and zoot-suit adorned saxophone quintet known as the G-Men would often perform in a staging area near the Videopolis amphitheater between showings of the Dick Tracy's Diamond Double-Cross. They were usually joined by costumed characters from the live show such as Big Boy Caprice, Mumbles and Flattop.

61 - Dick Tracy's Diamond Double-Cross - Background Music  10:23

In 1990, Dick Tracy's Diamond Double-Cross began a tradition of staging live musical productions based on the latest theatrical releases from the Disney studio. The background music from the original soundtrack of Dick Tracy, a modern take on depression era music, was heard as guests entered the Videopolis theater.

62 - Dick Tracy's Diamond Double-Cross  23:58

The lavishly produced, full-scale Broadway caliber musical presentation of the live Dick Tracy show was presented in a comical light, taking on a much lighter mood than the film, which more closely resembled the feel of the original comic book  series on which it was based. It also featured many of the songs from the Oscar winning score.

- Disney Afternoon Live! - Afternoon Avenue -

 In 1991, the walkway leading to Small World was transformed into Disney Afternoon Avenue, a promotional event celebrating Disney's syndicated  lineup of animated TV shows. The Motor Boat Cruise and Fantasyland Autopia were re-themed for the event, several meet and greet areas modeled after the fictional city of Duckburg USA were positioned within the area, and a special stage show was presented at Videopolis.

The twenty-minute Beauty and the Beast stage show told the story and highlighted all the musical numbers from the animated film. In 1995, as part of the promotional campaign for Disney/Pixar's groundbreaking computer animated feature, "Toy Story," a section of Tommorowland was transformed into the Toy Story Fun House. In time, the dance events at Videopolis were phased out, and the venue was used only for the presentation of live musical stage shows. With the 1995 opening of The Spirit of Pocahontas, the complex was officially renamed The Fantasyland Theatre. The Pocahontas show featured all the memorable songs from the animated film.

In 1996, Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland was transformed into the Festival of Fools Arena. Here, an outdoor musical production brought to life the story of Disney's latest animated feature,"Hunchback of Notre Dame,"  as presented by a band of traveling Gypsies through the music by Oscar Award winning composer Alan Menken.

75 - Animazement - Area Background Music  13:41

With the closing of the Spirit of Pocahontas, Fantasyland's theater underwent a major refurbishment. Anticipating its upcoming new show, Animazment, the theater received an all-weather canopy enclosure, and the staging area was redesigned with a regal new look, including royal blue faux marble, golden fixtures and a red velvet curtain.

In 1998, the Fantasyland Theatre presented a fast-paced musical revue featuring the latest string of blockbuster Disney animated features, from The Little Mermaid to Hercules. 77 - Club Buzz - Calling All Space Scouts  17:53

In 2000, the Tomorrowland Terrace was re-themed as Club Buzz, riding the heels of the blockbuster movie "Toy Story 2." The Terrace stage presented a new interactive stage show inviting space scouts to help Buzz Lightyear save the planet, once again, from the evil emperor Zurg, along with the help of space cadet Starla and the little green aliens.

78 - Mickey's Detective School  22:41

Mickey's Detective School was a temporary show presented at the Fantasyland stage after Animazement completed its three year run, and a new larger scale production was still under development. The show was a spoof of Film Noir crime dramas, encouraging audience participation to help solve the mysterious case of the Pluto dog robbery.

In 2013 a new Fantasy Faire Village premiered, located just beyond the castle walls, in the area formerly known as the Plaza Gardens, but the original Princess Fantasy Faire was held at the Fantasyland theater beginning in 2006. Several times daily there was a special live show at the Princess Fantasy Faire where children had the opportunity to meet their favorite Disney Princesses up close. As they made their grand entrance, a fanfare of royal trumpets heralded them in, one by one, with a memorable song from the film where each famous heroine had originated.

After each of the Disney princesses received their own grand introduction, they invited everyone to participate in a courtly promenade around the theater. As part of a special 2013 promotional event called Limited Time Magic, Disneyland brought back many of the "long lost" characters who had not appeared in the park for many years.
